Than a fatted calf with hatred (Proverbs 15:17).
Solomon learned that love is the cohesive force that binds one soul to another. It unites God with the righteous, husband with wife, parent with child, and friend with friend. Love is all forgiving but must not be concealed, kept secret.
Love must be directed toward both persons and principles. Love is commanded for what is right, such as wisdom, instruction, reproof, righteousness, and purity, but one should never love what is evil.
Love is manifested through mercy, forgiveness, and giving. Mercy bestows loving benefits upon its recipients, thus honoring God and bringing favor from men. Mercy preserves rulers and is the perfecting ingredient of good plans. It should be extended even to animals. Such loving mercy is rewarded by God. Forgiveness is a form of love that restores one person to another; it restores sinners to God and reunites friends. Giving manifests love when people help one another. Givers are able to make others welcome, attract friends, and sometimes assuage anger. Giving should follow wise principles: it should be generous, willing, impartial, and honest. It is wise to give both to God and man. In these ways, wise men attempt to love as God loves.
