history
In 1962 Stephen Dickey felt the call to build the Outpost Mission. The first activity was an egg hunt with the children from the Sweetwater Methodist Church. Which led to the organization of a Sunday school. They first met in a five room house in August of 1962. Sixty-nine people were present, and many people gave of their time to make this happen. Soon the time came for Sunday evening services. Visiting preachers filled the pulpit. Things were going good, then on December 4, 1966 the church was destroyed by fire and a fireman was killed on the way to the blaze. The group later held services in an abandoned church in East Sweetwater until December of 1967 when they moved into the newly built lower level of the present church.
In 1973 a member of Browder Memorial Methodist Church married and brought to the mission Rev. Blanche Settles, who would become the church pastor that year and has been the Mission's pastor throughout the years. (1973-present)
The Outpost Market has been located in many buildings since July 14, 1968 and it was finally located on the Mission's grounds. The money raised by the market has provided many necessities and on June 6, 1976 the Sanctuary was dedicated. The market has not been open for many years now but the memory of the great out pouring of support from the community still lingers at the Outpost Mission.
Since that time many people and organizations have helped make the Mission what it is today.
in loving memory
